How to Protect Your Computer from Viruses and Attacks?
A practical guide on how to effectively protect your computer from viruses, malware and hacker attacks. 7 simple steps.
Introduction
Securing your computer is essential for safe internet use. In this guide, I’ll show you 7 simple steps that will significantly increase your computer’s security.
1. Install a Good Antivirus
Choose a proven antivirus - I recommend:
- Windows Defender (built into Windows 10/11)
- Kaspersky
- Bitdefender
- ESET NOD32
Important: Always only ONE antivirus! Two antiviruses will conflict with each other.
2. Update Your System Regularly
Windows updates contain security patches. Enable automatic updates:
- Settings → Windows Update
- Check “Download updates automatically”
3. Use Strong Passwords
A good password is at least:
- 12 characters
- Upper and lower case letters
- Numbers and special characters
- Unique for each account
Example: MyStr0ng!P@ssword_2025
4. Enable Firewall
Windows has a built-in firewall. Check if it’s enabled:
- Control Panel → System and Security
- Windows Defender Firewall
- Should be “On”
5. Be Careful with Emails
NEVER open:
- Attachments from unknown senders
- Links in suspicious emails
- Invoices/transfers you didn’t order
6. Backups
Make regular backups of important data:
- External drive
- Cloud (OneDrive, Google Drive)
- NAS (for businesses)
3-2-1 Rule: 3 copies, 2 different media, 1 in a different location
7. Watch What You Install
Download programs ONLY from official sites. Avoid:
- Cracks and pirated software
- Unknown sites with “free software”
- Suspicious ads “Speed up your computer”
Summary
These 7 steps are the minimum for security. Remember - the weakest link is the user. Use common sense!
